Did you know DC is haunted?
Well with all the INSANE political news this past week I’m inspired to write about Washington, DC. Do you know there’s a huge rumor about a DEMON CAT that makes its way from the Capitol to the Whitehouse? D.C. also stands for DEMON CAT. I find it hilarious.
My friend and I took a ghost tour and walked through the city with a guide I found on Trip Advisor with Ghost City Tours DC. He’s a long time resident of the area and he also was surprised to hear this story for the first time.
“According to an 1898 article in the Washington Post, the Demon Cat appears as a regular-sized housecat initially but then quickly expands to the “size of an elephant before the eyes of a terrified observer. The first recorded appearance of the Demon Cat was in the United States Capitol in 1862. During the Civil War, the U.S. Capitol’s basement was used as a bakery to feed soldiers, and the Demon Cat appeared there several times. A guard reportedly fired a gun at the cat, and it disappeared. Since its initial manifestation, the Demon Cat most frequently shows up in the basement of the Capitol Building.1 The cat is sometimes described as a tabby, although others who have claimed to have seen it believe it is black.” - White House History . This is my favorite photo from my DC May 2023 trip.
It’s also the home to the EXORCIST STAIRS. They are located in the GEORGE TOWN area. I had no idea either. This movie still torments me and it probably has a lot to do with being raised Catholic and being advised numerous times to not play with the Ouija board. However, my friend knows that my twin and I have a Paranormal Travel and Cocktails podcast with a splash of pop culture. Take a moment to check our podcast out.
We walked up the stairs at a gingerly pace and then back down. Locals can be seen running up and down these stairs as part of their exercise routine.
This should be on everyone’s paranormal bucket list.
Oh’ and how can I forget the Old Stone House? It’s a part of our National Parks system listed as Rock Creek Park of District Columbia. Built circa 1766 it stands on its original foundation. It’s said to be very haunted although I personally didn’t experience anything there; the shop clerk did say she had an experience often with a ghost boy. According to the article linked under haunted “an African-American boy, a boy named Joey who plays on the third floor” - D.C. Ghost .com
These benches were located in the back of the home. Definitely wear tennis shoes while walking around the city.
The reason for my trip last year was I had a friend and fellow Chief Warrant Officer promoting at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters. I didn’t want to miss her ceremony and so I hit up or friend Ben who lives in the area. Ben told me that I brought the California sunshine, because it was the first time in weeks that people wanted to go outside.
Every night we went to a different ice cream or dessert spot, we took in as many sights as we could including the National Archives. I LOVE Washington, DC. Of course, I’ve only ever been in really good weather.
Have you ever been to Washington, DC? Will you plan a trip?
